MUNICIPAL / LAGOON SLUDGE
Reducing Sludge in a Municipal Wastewater Lagoon
Biological sludge reduction is a program that speeds up the native bacteria already living in a wastewater lagoon so they digest settled solids faster than new solids arrive. Waste Water Innovations (WWI) doses DRP Accelerator, an inorganic compound that carries usable oxygen to those bacteria, directly into the lagoon or as far upstream as we can reach water and power. We add no bacteria and no enzymes, and the program runs with no chemical additives. The lagoon stays in service while it runs, and it is billed as a monthly service, not a capital project.
Before you budget for dredging, measure what is actually down there.
- Organic sludge accumulates in a wastewater lagoon when solids settle out faster than the bacteria already there can digest them.
- A rising sludge blanket shrinks a lagoon's retention time and reduces the treatment capacity the facility was built with.
- DRP Accelerator is an inorganic compound that carries usable oxygen to bacteria already present in a wastewater lagoon.
- When bacteria have usable oxygen available, they stop stripping oxygen from sulfate, the reaction that produces hydrogen sulfide gas.
- Aerobic bacteria digest fats, oils, grease and settled organic solids faster than the anaerobic bacteria that dominate an oxygen-starved lagoon.
- A sludge blanket survey taken at fixed, GPS-referenced points is a repeatable way to compare a lagoon's depth before and after treatment.
- Dredging a lagoon is a capital project with equipment and disposal costs. Biological sludge reduction is delivered as a monthly service with no equipment to buy.
What sludge is costing you
Every inch of sludge on the bottom of a lagoon is treatment volume the facility paid for and cannot use. Retention time shrinks as the blanket rises, and solids and odor creep toward the outfall. Left unchecked, the fix is dredging: dewatering, biosolids hauling, disposal fees, a contractor on site for months, and a capital project that goes in front of the board or the voters. We built our program for the facility that would rather solve the problem before that meeting happens. The goal is to digest the organic fraction in place while the lagoon keeps running, and to prove it against a measured baseline rather than a brochure.
How DRP Accelerator breaks the sludge down
DRP Accelerator is an inorganic compound that carries usable oxygen to the bacteria already living in your lagoon. We add no bacteria and no enzymes. A lagoon bottom runs out of dissolved oxygen fast, and when the native bacteria cannot find oxygen in the water they take it from sulfate instead. The sulfide left behind becomes hydrogen sulfide gas, or H2S: the smell, the corrosion, and in a confined space, a hazard. Give those same bacteria a supply of usable oxygen and they take that first, so the sulfide that becomes H2S does not form in the first place. The same oxygen lets the aerobic bacteria, the fast ones, multiply and work through the fats, oils, grease and settled solids that anaerobic conditions leave alone. The program works in both the aerobic water column and the anaerobic sludge layer where the buildup actually is, with no chemical additives.
Direct-to-pond dosing, measured on a fixed grid
We dose the lagoon directly, at the pond itself or as far upstream as we can reach water and power, such as a lift station or headworks channel feeding it. Once it is in the water, natural flow carries the accelerator through the lagoon instead of relying on mechanical mixing. Before dosing starts we review the facility's wastewater data, calculate a dose and frequency, and survey the site to choose the delivery point. To track the sludge blanket we use a Sludge Judge at fixed, GPS-referenced points across the lagoon, so a follow-up survey lands on the same spots as the baseline. Water depth is logged alongside each survey, since drawdown for irrigation or other use can move pond levels on its own. We keep testing water quality throughout, and dosing continues as a monthly service for as long as the facility wants the result, with no capital purchase.
Where biological reduction does not work
The program targets organic sludge, the settled solids a biological system produces when digestion falls behind the load. It does not dissolve sand or grit, and it does not fix a failed aerator or a lagoon that is simply too small for what it receives. If a baseline survey shows a blanket that is mostly inorganic, we say so, and a dredging quote is still the right call. Results are site-specific, which is why we measure against a facility's own baseline instead of someone else's numbers. What a facility gets from us is a baseline it can audit and a follow-up survey on the same grid, so the decision about biosolids removal gets made on its own data. Permit compliance stays the facility's responsibility. Our program supports the biology, not the paperwork.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Straight answers.
Can bacteria really reduce sludge in a municipal wastewater lagoon?+
Yes. Native bacteria in a municipal wastewater lagoon are already digesting the organic fraction of the sludge, just slowly, because the lagoon runs short of oxygen. DRP Accelerator carries usable oxygen to those bacteria so digestion can outpace what is settling in, and the sludge blanket is measured before dosing and again afterward so the change shows up in the facility's own numbers.
How is sludge depth measured in a wastewater lagoon?+
Sludge depth in a wastewater lagoon is measured with a Sludge Judge at fixed, GPS-referenced points, with water depth logged alongside because drawdown from irrigation or other use can move pond levels on its own. A baseline survey before dosing and a follow-up survey on the same grid make a before-and-after comparison repeatable rather than a single spot reading.
Is biological sludge reduction a replacement for dredging a lagoon?+
Biological sludge reduction is an alternative to weigh against a dredging contract, not an automatic substitute for one. Dredging is a capital project with months of disruption. Biological sludge reduction is a monthly service that runs while the lagoon stays in operation. A measured baseline and a follow-up survey on the same grid show which path a given lagoon needs.
What does a lagoon sludge reduction program require from plant operators?+
Very little by design. We review the facility's wastewater data, calculate dosage and frequency, survey the site to choose the delivery point, and set up monthly dosing of DRP Accelerator directly into the lagoon or as far upstream as the site allows. Water quality testing runs alongside the dosing. Facility staff keep running the plant. We keep measuring.
